Who is God?

Who is God? That is a burning question that I pondered for so many years. I grew up learning about God, but I never really knew him. I honestly believed that he was cold, distant and aloof. I thought that he was angry and took great pleasure in punishing. I eventually ran away from the God that I thought I knew. Even though the path that I chose was dark, lonely and full of pain and regret, I have learned that God never left me. Even in my darkest moments he was always there loving me and waiting for my return. I hope that these words help you on your journey and can provide an answer if you have ever wondered who God really is.

Who I am

I am is my definition. I am…. There are so many words you can place at the end of this powerful description. I am the answer to every question. I am the healer, deliverer, comforter, counselor, and friend. I am powerful, awesome, wonderful, and fascinating. I am exciting and creative. I am remarkable and appealing. I am noteworthy and significant. I am proud of not only my accomplishments but of my creation.

I am not timid or insecure. I do not lack self-confidence or self-esteem. I am not ashamed or embarrassed of who I am. I am not ignorant, aloof, distant, or unaware.  I am not rude or ill mannered. I am not inconsiderate to the needs of others. I am not uncaring or thoughtless. I am not insensitive or oblivious. I am not prejudice or biased.

I am love. I am good. I am faithful. I am true. I am worthy. I am holy. I am just. There are many mysteries to who I am, but I am love. It defines and explains. I love deeply and greatly, and there is no beginning or end to it. I am God so I can have a personal relationship with many. My love never runs out. It continually exists and never fades. I am not human and am not limited by location or time. I love and desire relationship with all of my beloved. I am no respecter of persons, and am available to all who want me.

I am a jealous God. I am jealous for your time and of those who love me. I desire to be thought of and missed. I long to be wanted. I want to be sought after and craved. Think of someone one that you really love, and know that my feelings and passions are a million times stronger for you. I yearn for your time and attention. My love for you will never diminish, for it is not based on what you do, but simply on who you are.

I am alive and active and am always doing something new. I am a God of originality and innovation. I am energetic and vivacious. I never tire or wear out. I never sleep or am unaware of what is taking place in the lives of my children. I am observant and perceptive.

There are many attributes that I possess. I am a generous and loving Father. I am a kind and nurturing mother. I am a loyal and faithful friend. But I am also a warrior and am constantly fighting for you. I am continually warring on your behalf. My words are sharper than any two-edged sword. There is tremendous power in my name. Magnificent authority has been given to those who love and honor me.

I write love songs for each of my children and I am continually singing over them.  I constantly pour out my love like oil. I am generous on all occasions. I am not fearful or reluctant to share my heart. I do not hold things against you and then use them to hurt you later. I do not lose my temper and say cruel and spiteful words. I never intend to be cutting or insensitive. I never purposefully wound or damage hearts. I am not broken and can therefore love all out of perfection.

Nothing is difficult for me other than watching my children suffer. Nothing angers me like seeing my beloved tormented by the evil one. I am the comforter, and I long to surround you like a warm blanket and melt away the results of an extended winter inside of your soul. I am warm-hearted, sympathetic, affectionate, and kind. I love to open my arms and welcome my beloved into my embrace. You are always invited to come rest on my bosom. I will cover you with my feathers and protect you from all harm. I desire to be your hiding place, and I want to be your safe haven, a place of refuge from all storms of life. I will shield you from the elements, and be your sanctuary.

I am always offering new beginnings. I am the God of many chances. I bring the rescue boat to the stranded ones many times. I am always offering hope and deliverance. I am a savior. It is part of who I am. I love to rescue those who are ready to receive my help. Storms of life can be good. They help people to realize that they cannot make it on their own, because they need a savior. How sad for those who do not have eternal hope. How unfortunate for those who think they can be self-sufficient and attempt to create their own destinies. What I offer is so much greater. What I offer is peace and joy that one cannot experience without me. I offer fulfillment and help to fill emptiness. I can heal any pain, sickness, or disease. I am the answer to depression, addictions, mental illness, homelessness, and poverty.

I am the answer to a broken economy and a failing school system. But I have to be invited. I do not push my way into places that I am not welcome. People cannot solve all of the problems of the world, but I can. I love America because America is full of my children. I will not turn my back on America because my beloved lives there. I hear the cries of my children. I hear the cry for salvation all over the world. These voices ring loudly in my ears. I am the Good Samaritan; I will not leave someone stranded along the side of the road. When I look at mankind I do not see race, economic status, or color. I only see my children. I do not look through rose colored glasses. I see the truth because I am truth. The truth is that everyone requires a savior, and everyone needs to be rescued.
